An exciting new exhibition will be on display September 12 through November 1, in the Rainey Sculpture Pavilion at Brookgreen Gardens .  The Wild West in Historic and Contemporary Art includes major sculpture from the Brookgreen collection, as well as artworks and artifacts borrowed from artists and collectors.  The range of works illustrates the American West, from cowboys and Indians to settlers and contemporary westerners.

Robin Salmon, VP for Collections and Curator of Sculpture, said: “The Old West with its colorful characters is an important part of America ’s historic memory and national story.  Its fervor and romance captures the imagination of many people, although its rugged mystique sometimes does not accurately convey the reality of daily life on the Western frontier. This exhibit shows some of the difficulties as well as the beauties of Western life, past and present.”

Significant historic sculpture from the Brookgreen Gardens collection will include The Bronco Buster by Frederic Remington (1861-1909), The End of the Trail by James Earle Fraser (1876-1953), The Indian Hunter by John Quincy Adams Ward (1830-1910), A Grizzly Grave Digger by Edward Kemeys (1843-1907), On the Border of the White Man’s Land by Solon Borglum (1868-1922), The Fight by Edwin Willard Deming (1860-1942), The Sun Vow by Hermon A. MacNeil (1866-1947), On the Warpath by Cyrus Dallin (1861-1944), Pursued by A. Phimister Proctor (1862-1950), Womboli by A. A. Weinman (1870-1952), Head of a Tewa Indian by George Blodgett (1888-c.1959), Camouflage by Lone Wolf (1884-1970), and Archer-Tejas Warrior by Allie Victoria Tennant (c.1898-1971).

Additional sculpture from the Brookgreen collection and borrowed sculptures, paintings, and prints by important contemporary sculptors and painters will be shown.  Complementing the artwork will be Western jewelry and artifacts, some by noted artisans.  Among the participating contemporary artists are Scott Burdick, John Coleman, Glenna Goodacre, Richard Greeves, T. D. Kelsey, Alyson Kinkade, Mimi Litschauer, Curt Mattson, Herb Mignery, Paul Moore, William Reese, Cynthia Rigden, Sherry Sander, Rosie Sandifer, Sandy Scott, Shirley Thomson-Smith, Garland Weeks, Fritz White, Hollis Williford, and other significant Western artists.  Many are award-winning members of the National Sculpture Society, Cowboy Artists of America, or National Academy of Western Art, and are participants in the prestigious Prix de West exhibit.  Their artworks can be seen in museums and public places throughout the country.

            Many of the borrowed artworks will be available for purchase during the exhibition.

Brookgreen Gardens is a non-profit corporation and a National Historic Landmark located on U.S. 17 between Myrtle Beach and Pawleys Island , South Carolina .
