An exciting new exhibition will be on display September 12 through November 1, in the Rainey Sculpture Pavilion at Brookgreen Gardens .The Wild West in Historic and Contemporary Art includes major sculpture from the Brookgreen collection, as well as artworks and artifacts borrowed from artists and collectors. The range of works illustrates the American West, from cowboys and Indians to settlers and contemporary westerners.
Robin Salmon, VP for Collections and Curator of Sculpture, said: “The Old West with its colorful characters is an important part of America ’s historic memory and national story. Its fervor and romance captures the imagination of many people, although its rugged mystique sometimes does not accurately convey the reality of daily life on the Western frontier. This exhibit shows some of the difficulties as well as the beauties of Western life, past and present.”
