2009-2010 Cultural Council Young Treasures Scholars Named
17 scholarships awarded to local, young artists and musicians
Pawleys Island, SC -- May 22, 2009 --

Moving into its 15th year, the Young Treasures scholarship program continues to award financial support to local musicians and artists in middle and high school.  This year the program drew a record number of applicants.  Through the generous donations that exclusively support this program, the Cultural Council was able to award 1 visual art and 16 music scholarships to help support one-year’s private study.

“The Cultural Council is proud to administer this program,” says Sarah Collins, Executive Director.  “Having taken it over 4 years ago when it was Pawleys Island Youth Arts, we’ve been able to witness the immense talent our young musicians and artists possess.  The scholarships help cultivate their skills by assisting in the financial burden private lessons can bring.  The program would not be possible without the support of donors who want to see the skills and talents grow in the youth of our community.”

Throughout the history of the scholarship program, many scholars have gone on to excel in the arts, working nationally and internationally, attending the Governor’s School of Arts & Humanities, majoring in their chosen art field in college, giving back by teaching, and more.  This year’s list of scholars shows much promise in seeing these students also excel.  Congratulations to the 2009-2010 Young Treasures Scholars:  Kedrick Armstrong, Georgetown; Susanna Blamire, Georgetown; Margaret Casella, Pawleys Island; Zhongliang Chen, Pawleys Island; Brooke English, Georgetown; Caleb Cohen, Andrews; Luke Gates, Georgetown; Colin Glendinning, Conway; Charles Power, Georgetown; Thomas Small, Georgetown; Ayana Smith, Georgetown; Chloe Spitzer, Pawleys Island; Sara Stevens, Conway; and Bryan Van der Riet, Pawleys Island.
