About Us

The Cultural Council -- "official arts organization of Georgetown County" --  is an independent 501c3 non-profit organization. 

Mission Statement:  The mission of the Cultural Council shall be to serve as a catalyst to promote, coordinate, and stimulate the cultural, social, and economic climate in Georgetown County, South Carolina through education, advocacy, and programming.

Our mission allows us to work at creating a better community through the arts by
1) developing opportunities for artists to learn, perform and display;
2) supporting development of arts and cultural events for local and visiting audiences; &
3) a strong focus on, exposing youth to art, the creative process and its benefits to the community.

Programs and events we support and manage include:

  • Art, Painting and Photography classes for adults and youth
  • "Treasures of the Tidelands" spring Arts Fest - supporting & promoting local artists and arts groups
  • "Young Treasures" music & art scholarship program
  • "Digital Arts Experience" at Cavers Bay Library for youth
  • "After-School Arts Experience" at Teach My People for youth
  • Web portal for arts events, artists, and arts groups
  • Email newsletter of arts and cultural happenings

The Cultural Council is funded, in part, by Individual and Family memberships.  Additional operating support comes from the Gaylord & Dorothy Donnelley Foundation and the South Carolina Arts Commission, which is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Cultural Council’s Board of Directors includes Chair Barbara Passmore, Vice Chair Frank Beattie, Treasurer Susan Butler, Barriedel Llorens, Ron Charlton, James Johnson, Jason Lesley, Lisa Meares, Edith Morris, Sandra Quinn, Patty Shortt, Bill Sirmon, Tonia Speir and Julia Wilson.
