Dr. Eric Heiden, a Florence, SC dentist, has been involved with the art of photography for over 50 years. Although it's strictly a hobby, he has developed quite a reputation among the amateur and professional ranks of the area, having been accepted in numerous arts and crafts shows.
Dr. Heiden's fishing and boating exploits have been recorded on slides and video camera, and shown on local and national television.
His works have been exhibited at the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, SC, the Rice Museum's Prevost Gallery in Georgetown, SC, the Chapin & Burroughs Arts Museum in Myrtle Beach, SC, and at the Florence Museum in Florence, SC.
During an annual Darlington Arts & Crafts Show, his works won best slide and best photgraph in show. In the Murrells Inlet Arts & Crafts Show, his photographs have won several first places and a best in show purchase award. He has also been selected several times as "Photographer of the Year" in the Pee Dee area.
His photographs have been published in local newspapers, theatrical magazines, dental journals, The Sandlapper, Georgetown County Chamber of Commerce brochures. Some of his photographs can be seen nationwide in Petro Truck Stop restaurants. His most recent publications displaying his artistry were "South Carolina Sportsmand" and the "North Carolina Sportsman" magazines, sold in local shops in 2008.
Recently, Dr. Heiden has concentrated on compositions involving coastal scenes, and his photographs are displayed at the Cultural Council of Georgetown County, the Georgetown Rice Museum Prevost Gallery, JOYfilled Gifts & Garden Shop in Georgetown, and Got The Goods in Pawleys Island.
The artist feels that one can see the world more clearly through the eye of a camera, developing the sense of sight into the keenest of the five we possess. Most of his results were achieved with a single lens Reflex camera on a 35mm format. For certain subjects a Rolliflex larger camera was used. He's now also working with digital photography and teaching photography for the Cultural Council in the Litchfield Exchange.
Dr. Eric Heiden was a charter member of the Pee Dee Photographic Society and was it's first president. This group is no longer active, but Dr. Heiden's motto, which was the watchword of the Society, is still a motivating force for anyone seriously interested in pure photography as a hobby.
"Photography is a true reflection of one's creativity." - Dr. Eric Heiden
