Agnes Boyle

Agnes M. Boyle is a retired school teacher originally from New Jersey. She began drawing in pen and ink in the 1970's. She graduated from the College of Mount St. Joseph on the Ohio with a degree in Physical Education and Health and from New York University with a M.A. in Physical Education for the Handicapped. After retiring to Pawleys Island, she began her serious study of art. Her subjects reflect her love of the sea, the New England coast, and the beauty of the Carolinas.

In addition to being listed on the Cultural Council website, Sarah Collins, Interim Executive Director, recently sat down with Agnes for an interview.  A few times throughout the year we will be featuring Artist Members in our newsletter and website.  Agnes was the first in this series, and was randomly selected.  Below is the interview, followed by pictures of some of her works.

March 30, 2009 - Artist Interview with Agnes M. Boyle

Featured in the Cultural Council newsletter, Arts in the Tidelands, April 3 Edition

Just a few days ago Agnes M. Boyle agreed to sit down with me for an interview.  Quite an accomplishment for me, since she confessed as we walked down the hall to a quiet spot that when she taught school she was asked several times to interview for the school’s newspaper, and always declined.  Finally, when retiring the school newspaper reported that “she had nothing to say.”

Originally from the Jersey Shore, Agnes made a career and life out of teaching Physical Education.  The artist in her sparked during that time through the inspiration of a fellow art teacher.  She bought a book on drawing with pen & ink and taught herself.  Though no immediate family member was an artist, she still managed to find her love of art from within, and continued to perpetuate it in her spare time through practice.

After several years, she retired to this area for the golfing!  Her retirement has allowed time in her life for more professional and active lessons in art.  Slowly golf has taken a backseat.  While on the South Carolina coast she has taken formal classes from various local artists.  Agnes readily switches between mediums.  Currently, oil can be found on her palette as she just completed an ocean scene and is now moving onto her version of Renoir’s Banks of the River Seine at Asnieres, though Van Gogh she admires most.  Landscapes are her main subjects and she’s usually working from a picture she took to capture a scene that inspired her.  Ocean and beach scenes are her favorite!

I started winding down the interview and asked about her biggest success as an artist.  She said it’s the “pleasure it gives to my life.”  I couldn’t resist asking what art means to her.  “It’s an accomplishment to capture something that gives you pleasure, “ she revealed.  "My ultimate goal is to have all of my artwork spring from my imagination."

Annually, Agnes donates a painting to Brookgreen Garden's Gala & Auction fundraiser.  Her art can currently be seen in the Georgetown Art Gallery, Front St., Georgetown, SC and Sunset River Market Place, Calabash, NC.  Check out her 2009 Calendar, cards, works in watercolor, pastels, acrylic, and colored pencils.  She is a student and Artist Member of the Cultural Council.

Oh, and her favorite color is blue.
